Saturday morning, Braeden, Carsen and I headed out to the 7th Annual Joan Mikeska Realty Bike Rodeo in Temple. It was our first time going, so we didn't know exactly what to expect. We got there and got registered. They fitted the boys with bike helmets (FREE) and t-shirts (FREE). Then they took their bikes over to make sure the tires had plenty of air.
After getting all set, we went and got some donuts and milk (FREE) since we had about 45 minutes before everything started. Oh, and we found a friendly frog!

... And a duck
We were some of the first people there, and as more kids arrived and discovered the duck, I was reminding them to be gentle with it. I don't know what it was, but the duck must have thought I was protecting it, because when I tried to walk away, it followed me. As I moved away further, she came closer... finally she was so close that she was standing on my foot. She stayed with me like this for at least 20 minutes.
They finally got the kids all together, split them up into age groups (1st grade being the youngest - so Carsen got to be with Braeden).I didn't realize that I was taping Carsen's crash until we got home and looked at pictures. This was a great video to show them the reasons we wear bike helmets. Parents, PLEASE make your kiddos wear their helmets. I don't even want to THINK about what would have happened to Carsen's head had he NOT had his helmet on!

OMG.....thank you for the helmet my little boy was wearing. That makes me sick to watch and even sicker to imagine what would and could have happened to him without the helmet.
Love the little duck, I would have wanted to take it home with me. Good restraint Briana!! LOL
Oh... that is terrible. Thank goodness for helmets! April's girl had a crash a couple of summers ago where she HAD a helmet on, but not on correctly, so when she hit the front of her head it just slid back on her. She got rolled into the hospital WHILE April was on a training shift in the ER. Awful! Anyways, she had to get shipped to the Childrens Hospital in PDX and was there for several days, but was ok. Scary stuff. Love helmets... for so many reasons. (And feel so lucky that we never got seriously injured without them :)
That sounds like such a fun day! I'm glad Carsen was ok. I showed the kids the video of Carsen. We just bought them helmets a week ago so hopefully that will help remind them to wear them!
I was thinking about taking the boys to this... wish I would have gone. Looks like it was really fun and helpful, and FREE!!! Thanks for posting that video. Shane was just giving the boys a lecture about not fighting me about putting on helmets, because he has been taking care of a kiddo with a serious head injury. .. who hit his head after riding a skate board... just riding, not doing tricks. It really is scary!! I'm going to show the kids this video. Thanks again for posting.
